Bihar’s Rajan Kumar Tops UPSC Engineering Service Exam Again

Rajan Kumar from Makoka area, Patna, Bihar, has once again secured the top rank in the UPSC Engineering Services Examination (ESE) 2025 for the Electrical Engineering branch. He had also achieved the first rank in the same branch last year. Rajan Kumar graduated with a B.Tech from IIT Roorkee in 2021 and cleared the GATE exam in 2022. Although he did not qualify the ESE prelims in his first attempt, he topped the Electrical Engineering branch in both 2024 and 2025 UPSC exams.

In the Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering branch, 25-year-old Utkarsh Pathak from Kesari Nagar, Patna, secured the top rank nationwide. Utkarsh, son of advocate Ravishankar from Patna High Court, completed his 10th and 12th from St. Mary’s School and St. Michael’s School respectively. He graduated with a B.Tech from IIT Patna in 2023. After completing his degree, Utkarsh left his job in a private company in Bengaluru to focus on preparation for the Electronics and Telecommunication branch.

The government has recommended 458 candidates for appointment to various engineering services under the central government. These recommendations are based on written exams held in August and personality tests conducted between October and November. Among the recommended candidates, 202 are from Civil Engineering, 116 from Electronics and Telecommunication, 79 from Electrical, and 61 from Mechanical streams. The list also includes 26 candidates from the benchmark disability category.

The government had announced filling 554 vacancies through the 2025 Engineering Services Examination. Of these, 251 posts are in Civil Engineering, 134 in Electronics and Telecommunication, 97 in Electrical, and 72 in Mechanical Engineering. The UPSC also stated that the candidature of 102 recommended candidates is provisional, subject to verification of eligibility criteria.
