Bangalore, March 26: The Karnataka government has introduced a draft digital policy aimed at regulating screen time for students in grades 9 to 12. Announced on March 24, the policy recommends limiting recreational screen time to just one hour per day. Additionally, it suggests that internet access be cut off after 7 PM and that students stay away from screens for one hour before bedtime.
The policy also proposes a ‘child plan’ for mobile usage, which includes an audio-only option and restrictions on internet access after designated hours. It emphasizes the need to develop age-appropriate devices and operating systems.
According to the government, approximately 25% of teenagers are struggling with internet addiction, leading to issues such as sleep deprivation, anxiety, and lack of focus. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Health and Family Welfare Department, Karnataka State Mental Health Authority, NIMHANS, and the Education Department.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah first proposed this policy in the budget on March 6, highlighting the need for stricter regulations on social media use for children under 16. Karnataka is the first state in India to implement such measures.
