Controversy Over Duplicate UPSC Rank 301 Candidates

Mumbai, March 8: A significant controversy has emerged in the results of the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025, where two candidates, both named Akanksha Singh, have claimed the same rank of 301. The merit list released by UPSC shows that both candidates share the roll number 0856794, leading to confusion and allegations of discrepancies in the admission process.

The candidates hail from different states; one is from Ara in Bihar, while the other is from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh. Investigations by a local news outlet revealed that the admit card of the candidate from Uttar Pradesh correctly displays the roll number, and scanning the QR code confirms this. However, the Bihar candidate’s admit card also shows the same roll number, but scanning the QR code reveals a different number, 085659.

This discrepancy raises questions about whether there was an error in the issuance of admit cards by UPSC or if there has been tampering with the Bihar candidate’s document. As of now, UPSC has not provided any clarification regarding the issue.

The Uttar Pradesh candidate, who has completed her MBBS and MS from AIIMS Patna, expressed confidence in her results, stating that there is no confusion on her part and that the results are indeed hers. She urged the Bihar candidate to present proof if she believes otherwise.

On the other hand, the Bihar candidate, who is related to a notable figure in the region, has a strong academic background, having excelled in her studies. She also emphasized that the issue lies with UPSC and not with her.

In a broader context, the UPSC has announced the final results for the Civil Services Examination 2025, with Anuj Agnihotri from Rajasthan securing the top position. A total of 958 candidates have been selected for various services, including 180 for IAS, 55 for IFS, and 150 for IPS. Candidates can check the final merit list on the official UPSC website.

Additionally, the Indian government has recently changed the cadre allocation rules for IAS and IPS, replacing the previous zone system with a new policy effective from 2026.
