Mumbai, April 2: The Indian Navy has officially received the indigenous anti-submarine shallow water craft named ‘Malwan’ on March 31. Designed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), this advanced vessel is equipped for underwater surveillance and anti-submarine warfare (ASW).
The ‘Malwan’ is armed with sophisticated systems including torpedoes, rockets, modern radar, and sonar capabilities. Its design allows it to operate effectively in challenging environments where locating submarines is difficult. The vessel features three engines and operates using a waterjet system, enabling it to maneuver quietly and efficiently.
Additionally, the ‘Malwan’ can deploy and neutralize mines in the sea, enhancing its operational versatility. This craft is part of an eight-ship project under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, aimed at bolstering India’s coastal defense and underwater warfare capabilities. The name ‘Malwan’ pays homage to the coastal town in Maharashtra, continuing the legacy of INS Malwan, which was commissioned into the Navy in 2003.
