BSNL Launches Unique Phone; Anil Menon Set for ISS Mission

Mumbai, July 11: In today’s significant current affairs, crucial for students preparing for government jobs, two major announcements have emerged.

International:
1. Indian-origin astronaut Anil Menon is set to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) on July 14 as part of NASA’s next mission. He will be accompanied by Russian astronauts Anna Kikina and Pyotr Dubrov. This mission is part of the joint commercial crew program by NASA and SpaceX, launching aboard the Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon rocket. Anil, an American physician and astronaut of Indian descent, joined SpaceX in 2018 and played a vital role in the company’s first human flight. He was part of NASA’s astronaut training in 2021 and has previously been associated with the Himalayan Rescue Association. During his time in space, Anil will conduct research on the effects of long-term space travel on the human body, focusing on health, biology, Earth observation, and new space technologies.

National:
2. The Indian Navy will officially commission the Project 17A stealth frigate ‘INS Mahendragiri (F38)’ in Visakhapatnam on July 11. Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, INS Mahendragiri is named after the Mahendragiri mountain range in the Eastern Ghats. This frigate features a modern ‘Combined Diesel or Gas’ (CODOG) propulsion system, enhancing its speed and endurance for long maritime missions. With over 75% indigenous components, INS Mahendragiri exemplifies the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. Equipped with advanced stealth technology, BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, and Barak-8 air defense missile systems, it is capable of anti-submarine warfare, air defense, and surface combat operations. The commissioning of INS Mahendragiri strengthens India’s indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities.

Sports:
3. The prestigious Big Bash League (BBL) from Australia will host its first match in India, specifically in Chennai, on July 10, 2026. This marks the first time an official BBL match will take place outside Australia. The inaugural match will be held at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, featuring the Melbourne Renegades against the Perth Scorchers. This initiative aims to enhance the popularity of BBL in India and strengthen sports collaboration between India and Australia.

4. In a historic moment, the women’s cricket team played a Test match at Lord’s for the first time on July 10, 2023. This follows 142 years after the first men’s Test match between England and Australia was held at the same venue in July 1884. The match between India and England is part of women’s cricket history, marking the 153rd Test match for women at Lord’s.
