Mumbai, March 11: In a significant development in the aviation sector, Peter Elbers, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of IndiGo, has resigned from his position. The announcement was made through a regulatory filing on March 10. Following his resignation, Rahul Bhatia, the founder and Managing Director of IndiGo, will take over as the interim CEO while the airline searches for a permanent replacement.
Peter Elbers, who took over as CEO in September 2022, previously served as the CEO of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines from 2014 to 2022. His departure comes on the heels of operational challenges faced by IndiGo, including a series of flight cancellations that affected approximately 300,000 passengers, leading to a fine of ₹22.20 crore imposed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
IndiGo, officially known as InterGlobe Aviation Limited, is India’s largest airline, headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana.
In other news, Australia has granted humanitarian visas to five female football players from Iran, allowing them to reside in the country. This decision follows the players’ refusal to sing the national anthem before a match against South Korea, which led to criticism and calls for punishment back home. The humanitarian visa allows these athletes to live, work, and study in Australia under extraordinary circumstances, such as severe illness, war, or human rights violations.
These developments highlight ongoing issues in both the aviation industry and international human rights, reflecting the complexities faced by individuals and organizations alike.
