India Wins Bronze at Badminton World Championship

Mumbai, August 24: In a remarkable achievement for Indian badminton, the duo of Trisa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand secured a bronze medal at the Badminton World Championship. This victory marks India’s first medal in the women’s doubles category in 15 years, with the last being won by Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa in 2011.

The pair reached the semifinals but faced a tough challenge against the world number one team from China, Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning, losing the match with scores of 18-21, 21-13, 21-8.

Trisa Jolly, who won the Kerala State Senior Badminton Championship at just 13 years old, has previously earned a bronze medal in women’s doubles and a silver in singles at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Gayatri Gopichand, on the other hand, was the number one player in India at the under-13 and under-15 levels from 2015 to 2017 and has also secured an international bronze medal in women’s doubles.

With this achievement, Trisa and Gayatri join the elite club of Indian athletes who have made it to the podium at the World Championship, showcasing their talent and dedication on a global stage.
