Justice Yashwant Verma Resigns Amid Cash Scandal

New Delhi, April 10: Justice Yashwant Verma has submitted his resignation from the Allahabad High Court to President Droupadi Murmu on April 9. This decision comes in the wake of a cash scandal that has raised significant concerns. Justice Verma was transferred from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court following the discovery of bundles of burnt ₹500 notes at his residence after a fire incident on March 14, 2025.

Born and raised in Allahabad, Justice Verma has a long-standing in the legal profession, having followed in his father’s footsteps, who was also a High Court judge. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from Delhi University and obtained his LL.B. from Rewa University in Madhya Pradesh in 1992. He began his legal practice focusing on civil affairs and served as a special counsel for the Allahabad High Court from 2006 to 2012.

From 2012 to August 2013, he was the Chief Standing Counsel for the Uttar Pradesh government before becoming a senior advocate. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court on October 13, 2014, and became a permanent judge on February 1, 2016.

Justice Verma was appointed to the Delhi High Court on October 11, 2021, alongside Justice Chand Dhari Singh. His resignation comes just as a parliamentary investigation into the allegations surrounding the burnt cash was set to begin. If accepted by the President, it could lead to a criminal inquiry against him.

During his tenure, Justice Verma made several notable rulings, including granting bail to Dr. Kafeel Khan in a high-profile medical negligence case in 2018 and addressing issues related to gun licensing and gold import regulations in subsequent years.

As the legal community watches closely, the implications of his resignation and the ongoing investigations remain to be seen.
