Mumbai, September 24: Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi have recently expressed concerns regarding certain decisions and processes related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Sukhbir Singh Sandhu was appointed as Election Commissioner in March 2024, while Dr. Joshi took office in 2025.
Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, an IAS officer from the 1988 batch, holds an MBBS degree, making him a medical graduate. In October 2019, he became the Chairman of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and played a significant role in making FASTag mandatory across the country. His contributions to highway sector reforms have been noteworthy, with approximately ₹30,000 crore in cases resolved through mediation during his tenure, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI). Sandhu is also a former hockey player with interests in trekking and mountaineering, having scaled the Black Peak (22,000 feet) in Uttarkashi. He was invited to speak at Harvard Business School in Boston, USA, on reducing stress in Indian cities.
Dr. Vivek Joshi, an IAS officer from the 1989 batch, has served in various significant roles in both state and central governments for nearly 35 years. He was appointed as Election Commissioner on February 19, 2025. Dr. Joshi holds an Executive Master’s degree in International Business from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade. He has previously served as Deputy Commissioner in Jind, Hisar, and Panchkula in Haryana, and became Commissioner in the Finance Ministry (DFS) in November 2022.
