Vapi, October 13: Indian cricketer Smriti Mandhana has been appointed as a celebrity advocate for UNICEF India. This announcement coincides with the launch of a significant project on the Daman-Ganga River in Gujarat, amounting to ₹159.50 crores.
The project aims to enhance irrigation facilities for approximately 549 hectares of agricultural land across six villages, including Namdha, Chandor, Mohan, Eklahare, Nahuli, and Jamburi. It is expected to improve groundwater recharge and reduce the impact of tidal fluctuations, while also creating new road corridors and boosting tourism and employment opportunities in the region.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is overseeing the initiative, which will be constructed using the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model. The dam will be located about three kilometers downstream from the existing Vapi Weir, contributing to better water supply for the local population of around 230,000.
Mandhana’s role as a UNICEF advocate highlights her commitment to social causes, aligning with the project’s goals of improving the lives of the community.
