Nainital, September 5: Students at the Government Girls Inter College in Betalghat, Nainital, have staged a protest demanding the appointment of teachers due to a significant shortage affecting their education. On September 3, students from classes 10, 11, and 12 gathered to voice their concerns over the vacant teaching positions.
Currently, all nine teaching posts at the school are unfilled, and five additional graduate-level positions are also vacant. Classes are being conducted with the help of guest and part-time teachers, which the students believe is inadequate for their learning needs.
Students Demand Immediate Appointments
Under the leadership of the Parents’ Association president, the students have reached out to officials from the education department and local representatives. They expressed their concerns, stating that without teachers, their future is at risk. The students have urged the government and the education department to fill the vacant positions promptly.
Months of Efforts with No Response
Shekhar Dani, president of the Block Congress Committee, mentioned that he has been advocating for teacher appointments for several months, highlighting the injustice faced by the students. He stated that it is unacceptable for young girls, who should be focusing on their studies, to have to fight for their rights. Dani emphasized that the government has a responsibility to provide quality education to girls, and leaving positions vacant for years is detrimental to their future.
This issue had previously been raised in 2024, but no action has been taken regarding the students’ demands for teachers. Following the news going viral on social media, many have praised the students, calling them “rock stars” for their courage.
The protest in Nainital is a significant reminder of the urgent need for educational reforms and the importance of addressing the staffing crisis in schools to ensure a better future for students.
