Raigarh, September 16: The world’s longest ‘Steel Slag Road’ has been officially recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records, marking a significant achievement for Chhattisgarh. This innovative road construction technique utilizes waste from steel plants, known as steel slag, as a base material, developed by the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI).
Steel slag roads are reported to be 30% more durable and stronger compared to traditional bituminous roads, while also reducing construction costs by approximately 30%. This project not only promotes sustainable practices by minimizing the need for natural stone mining but also aligns with India’s ‘Waste to Wealth’ initiative and the Clean India Mission.
The first steel slag road in India was constructed in Surat, Gujarat, in 2022. While cement or concrete roads typically last over 30 years, roads made from steel slag have a lifespan of about 15 years. This advancement in road construction is expected to enhance infrastructure while supporting environmental conservation efforts.
