New Delhi, October 10: Yogesh Singh has officially commenced his second five-year term as the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University, making him the first Indian to be reappointed for a full term in this role. His new term began earlier this month, and if completed, it will extend his tenure until October 2031, marking a decade in the position. Singh will also continue to serve as the head of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), a role he has held since December of last year.
Singh’s reappointment comes at a crucial time as Delhi University is undergoing significant changes under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. These changes include the introduction of a four-year undergraduate program, a revised curriculum structure, and admissions through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).
The possibility of Singh’s second term was made feasible by a recent amendment to Rule 11-F(4) of the Delhi University Act by the central government in October 2023. Previously, Vice-Chancellors were not eligible for reappointment after a five-year term. The new regulations now allow for the reappointment of the current Vice-Chancellor for an additional five years.
During his first term, which began in 2021, Singh implemented several key initiatives, including the adoption of the NEP 2020, the launch of the four-year graduate program, and the promotion of digital administration and online services. His leadership has also focused on enhancing academic and research programs and improving infrastructure at the university.
