New Delhi, June 17: A recent report highlights that 70% of fast-track AI courses may not be effective for job seekers. With about 14% of job vacancies in the country directly requiring artificial intelligence skills, the demand is on the rise. However, a joint report by NASSCOM and Indeed warns that many current courses are misleading.
Companies are increasingly looking for candidates who can quickly adapt to roles through short-term courses lasting 3-6 months, rather than waiting for candidates to complete a traditional four-year degree. The report emphasizes the importance of having a portfolio of 3-4 live, deployed public projects to stand out in the job market.
Experts suggest that while tool-based skills, such as those taught in courses on ChatGPT, may become obsolete within six months, core principles like data literacy and ethical AI will remain relevant for 3-5 years or more.
In an interview with Suchita Dutta, Executive Director of the Indian Staffing Federation, several key questions were addressed:
1. Are short-term courses sufficient for jobs?
No, the market rewards those with a traditional degree foundation along with practical AI understanding and live project experience.
2. Are claims of ‘100% job guarantee’ valid?
Such claims often come with hidden conditions like minimum salary requirements and mandatory attendance.
3. Is there a salary advantage for those with AI skills?
Yes, the demand for AI skills has led to a significant salary increase, with average salaries rising by 56% over the past year.
4. What is the salary trend in generative AI and related fields?
Roles in generative AI and MLOps are offering mid-level packages between 18-35 lakhs annually.
5. Which jobs are most affected by AI?
AI is projected to reduce entry-level roles by 20-25%, with a 23% month-on-month and 44% year-on-year decline in such positions.
6. How has the interview process changed?
Coding tests are no longer the norm; employers now focus on problem-solving abilities and decision-making skills.
For those starting their AI learning journey, the course “AI for Everyone” by Andrew Ng on Coursera is recommended. This course, which takes only 6-10 hours to complete, provides foundational knowledge about AI without requiring coding skills.
As the landscape of job opportunities continues to evolve due to AI, it is crucial for job seekers to stay informed and choose their educational paths wisely.
