Gorakhpur, September 9: A video featuring a Sub-Inspector (SI) threatening students at DDU Gorakhpur University has gone viral, sparking outrage among the student community. In the footage, the SI is heard saying, “I will use so much force that I will cool you down; you don’t know this is Gorakhpur police.”
The incident occurred as students were on a hunger strike demanding their rights. The video captures the moment when additional proctor Dr. Ved Prakash Rai, police forces, and university guards attempted to disperse the protesting students who were sitting in front of the administrative building.
Tensions escalated when the students resisted the removal, leading to a heated argument and physical altercations between the students and administrative officials. The situation became so tense that Dr. Rai had to leave the scene.
The protest, which began on August 25, escalated to a hunger strike on September 5 after the administration failed to address the students’ demands. The students are protesting against alleged irregularities within the university and have vowed to continue their movement until their issues are resolved.
Social media users have rallied in support of the students, questioning the police’s conduct during the incident. Despite the uproar, DDU has yet to issue a statement regarding the viral video.
In a related note, the Supreme Court recently affirmed the right to peaceful protest, emphasizing that the constitution guarantees this freedom within legal boundaries.
Protests have been reported across various colleges in India, including Gandhi Medical College in Bhopal and NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad, highlighting a growing trend of student activism.
