India-New Zealand FTA Takes Effect; Austrahind 2026 Military Exercise Begins

Mumbai, October 21: The India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) officially came into effect on October 20, 2023. Under this agreement, Indian exports to New Zealand will receive duty-free access, benefiting various sectors including ready-made garments, leather goods, carpets, ceramics, engineering products, and automobile parts.
Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal flagged off the first consignment of mini excavators from Maharashtra to New Zealand, marking a significant step in bilateral trade. The primary objective of the FTA is to double trade between the two countries to ₹35,000 crore by 2030. This agreement is expected to open new visa pathways and market access opportunities for Indian professionals and students in New Zealand, while also promoting investment in agriculture, technology, automobiles, and manufacturing sectors.
In another significant development, the joint military exercise ‘Austrahind-2026’ commenced on October 19, 2023, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. This exercise, which will run until November 1, involves 120 soldiers each from the Indian and Australian armies, including personnel from the Garhwal Rifles and the 13th Brigade of Australia. For the first time, a New Zealand observer team is participating in this exercise, aimed at enhancing interoperability and joint operational capabilities between the two nations.
Additionally, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Mumbai on October 20 for a three-day official visit, where he held bilateral talks with Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. Discussions focused on strategic partnerships, economic cooperation, regional stability, and energy security. Rubio also attended the ‘Freedom 250 Reception’ at the Jio World Convention Centre, celebrating key achievements in U.S. history and India-U.S. diplomatic relations.
As these developments unfold, they present new opportunities for job seekers and professionals in various sectors, particularly in international trade and defense.
