West Bengal Court Cancels OBC Certificates

Mumbai, August 14: The Calcutta High Court has annulled all previously issued OBC certificates in West Bengal, following a directive to revoke the OBC-A and OBC-B classifications established during the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. The bench, comprising Justices Rajshekhar Mantha and Anuj Singh, stated that these classifications are no longer applicable in the state. Consequently, individuals holding these certificates will now be categorized as general category.

This ruling stems from controversies surrounding the OBC classification that emerged after the TMC government divided the OBC category into OBC-A and OBC-B in 2010. Allegations of irregularities and corruption in the issuance of OBC certificates led to legal challenges. In 2024, the Calcutta High Court had already annulled the inclusion of 66 communities in the OBC list and invalidated their certificates. The court has mandated the state government to conduct a fresh survey and prepare a new OBC list.
