Mumbai, April 14: In a historic move, Australia has appointed Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as its first female Army Chief, marking a significant milestone in the country’s military history. Coyle will assume her new role in July, succeeding Lieutenant General Simon Stuart.
This appointment is notable as it comes after 125 years of the Australian Army’s existence without a female leader at the helm. At 55 years old, Coyle brings a wealth of experience, having joined the Army in 1987 and later earning a degree in Science from the Australian Defence Force Academy.
Coyle has held various significant positions, including leading the National Support for Defence and being part of Joint Task Force 633, which operated in Afghanistan and the Middle East. Currently, women make up approximately 21% of the Australian Defence Force, with a target to increase this to 25% by 2030.
Coyle’s appointment is expected to inspire future generations of women in the military and promote gender diversity within the ranks.
