Solicitor General Tushar Mehtas Tenure Extended Until 2029

Mumbai, June 23: The central government has officially extended the tenure of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta for an additional three years, allowing him to serve from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2029. This extension marks Mehta’s fourth consecutive term, making it the second-longest tenure in the history of the position.

Tushar Mehta first assumed the role of Solicitor General in 2018 and has seen his term extended previously in 2020 and 2023. His tenure will now continue until 2029, following approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).

Before Mehta, the record for the longest-serving Solicitor General was held by C.K. Daphtari, who served for 13 years. As Solicitor General, Mehta is the second-highest legal officer in the Government of India, just below the Attorney General.

In addition to Mehta’s extension, the government has also extended the terms of five Additional Solicitors General (ASG) working in the Supreme Court for another three years.
