Mumbai, July 6: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has ordered the closure of 58 engineering and technical colleges across the country for the academic session 2025-26. Students already enrolled in these institutions will not be left in the lurch.
Private Colleges Hit Hardest
The majority of the affected institutions are private, with 55 out of the 58 colleges being privately funded. Only three colleges are government-aided.
According to AICTE, the colleges will cease operations entirely once the final batch of current courses completes its studies. If a complete closure is necessary, students may be transferred to other colleges in accordance with AICTE regulations.
Over 950 Courses Terminated
AICTE officials have stated that the closures extend beyond just colleges. More than 950 technical and engineering courses across various institutions have also been permanently shut down. Courses that lacked student interest or did not have adequate resources to operate have been removed from the list.
About AICTE:
The AICTE serves as a statutory advisory body and regulatory authority for technical education in India, overseeing programs in engineering, architecture, management, and pharmacy. The council issues closure orders for institutions facing issues such as low student admissions, inability to maintain required faculty numbers, and non-compliance with infrastructure and operational standards.
