DU Hindu College Admission Controversy Sparks Teacher Protests

Mumbai, October 6: The admission process at Hindu College, part of Delhi University, has come under intense scrutiny following allegations of irregularities. Faculty members and the Hindu College Staff Association (HCSA) have taken to the streets, demanding accountability over what they claim is a breach of admission limits.

Teachers and the HCSA allege that despite strong objections from the admission committee and department heads, the college exceeded the stipulated 20% limit for admissions through sports and extracurricular activities.

In a memorandum submitted to DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh, the faculty has called for an investigation into the alleged admission irregularities and requested that the Vice-Chancellor take control of Hindu College’s administration.

The controversy centers around the allocation of seats under the sports and extracurricular activities (ECA) quota. According to the HCSA, more seats than permitted have been assigned, particularly in the BCom (Honours) and BA (Honours) Political Science programs, where the limit was reportedly breached.

The HCSA began a protest on September 14, raising concerns over the allocation of 17 admissions for 10 seats in the commerce program and 15 for political science, which violates the established guidelines.

Hindu College has stated that the issue is beyond its control, attributing the excess admissions to a mistake in the university’s admission algorithm. The university has acknowledged this error, clarifying that the admissions process is centralized and governed by the DU admission cell.

Students have also accused the administration of intimidation tactics against protesters, alleging that irregular meetings and parallel committees have undermined their concerns.

The situation remains tense as the HCSA continues to demand a thorough investigation and has passed a no-confidence motion against the principal, calling for the removal of key administrative figures.

The university’s admission rules dictate specific quotas for various categories, including OBC, SC, ST, EWS, and persons with disabilities (PwD), further complicating the ongoing dispute.

In light of the controversy, the HCSA is advocating for a reopening of the admission cell for three days to allow for proper allocation of seats.
