Thiruvananthapuram, May 22: The Kerala government has announced the establishment of the country’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) department, marking a significant step in leveraging technology for governance. This initiative, named ‘AI for Governance,’ aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of government services through AI applications.

The state will also set up two AI Centers of Excellence (AI-CoEs) under the ‘India AI Mission’ and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITy). The industry minister, P.K. Kunhalikutty, has been entrusted with overseeing this pioneering project.

The first AI center will focus on ‘Bio-AI’ and will be located in Kochi’s digital hub, while the second center will operate as a general-purpose AI facility at the Digital University in Thiruvananthapuram. These projects are expected to foster innovation and create job opportunities in the tech sector, aligning with the state’s vision for a digitally empowered governance framework.

This initiative not only positions Kerala as a leader in AI governance but also aims to attract investments and talent in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
