Mumbai, September 3: The deteriorating condition of government schools in India has come under scrutiny once again following two alarming incidents. In Bagalkot, Karnataka, six students were injured when concrete fell from the ceiling of a classroom during school hours. One child sustained serious injuries to the head. Officials reported that all students received minor injuries and are receiving appropriate treatment in the hospital.
The incident occurred while students were attending class, and chaos ensued when a portion of the ceiling collapsed, showering debris onto the students. Parents have expressed their concerns, stating that they have previously complained about the school’s dilapidated condition and are demanding permanent repairs.
In response to the incident, the Deputy Director of the School Education and Literacy Department visited the school and ordered immediate repairs from the Panchayat Raj Engineering Department.
Meanwhile, in Delhi, a similar incident occurred at the Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Sagarpur, where two eighth-grade girls were injured when a ceiling fan fell during class. One girl suffered severe head injuries and required nine stitches.
Witnesses reported that the incident took place around 8:30 AM, prompting family members to call the police. A fact-finding committee has been established by the Deputy Director of Education for the South West district to investigate the incident, with a report expected within three working days.
Concerns regarding school infrastructure are highlighted by the UDISE report, which indicates that 7.73% of school buildings require urgent repairs.
