TRAI Issues New Guidelines to Curb Spam Calls

Mumbai, August 11: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced new regulations aimed at combating spam calls and telecom fraud. On August 10, TRAI directed telecom companies to utilize the 1601 series of numbers for service and transaction-related calls in the non-BFSI sector, which includes banking, financial services, insurance, and government institutions.

This initiative is designed to help customers distinguish between legitimate service calls and suspicious or fraudulent ones. By implementing these guidelines, TRAI aims to enhance customer trust and reduce telecom-based fraud.

Previously, TRAI has taken action against unauthorized telemarketers, including issuing notices and disconnecting telecom resources. In 2025 alone, TRAI issued over 731,000 notices and disconnected more than 184,000 telecom resources.

The new rules are expected to significantly improve the identification of spam and fraudulent calls, ultimately benefiting consumers across the country.
