Mumbai, May 20: In a significant milestone for the Indian Air Force (IAF), Squadron Leader Sanya has become the first female officer to qualify as a Category A flying instructor. This achievement was announced on May 18, marking a historic moment in the 93-year history of the IAF.
Flying instructors play a crucial role in training pilots, and the Category A qualification is the highest rating for a qualified flying instructor (QFI). This designation not only allows instructors to train junior instructors but also signifies a master instructor status.
Sanya joined the Indian Air Force on June 20, 2015, and has since progressed through the ranks, becoming a Flight Lieutenant in 2017 and a Squadron Leader in 2021. The position of Squadron Leader is equivalent to that of a Major in the Army, and Sanya will now work with the Safety and Operational Flying Unit.
This achievement is a testament to the growing representation of women in the armed forces and their capabilities in roles traditionally held by men.
