Mumbai, May 21: In a significant achievement for Taiwanese literature, author Yang Shuang-ji’s book “Taiwan Travelogue” has been awarded the International Booker Prize. The English translation of the book, done by Lin King, marks a historic moment as it is the first time a book translated from Mandarin has received this prestigious award.
“Taiwan Travelogue” is a love story set in the 1930s during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan. The International Booker Prize, which includes a cash award of $50,000, is shared equally between the author and the translator. This award aims to promote fiction literature from other languages on a global platform.
Previously, in 2025, Indian author Banu Mushtaq’s collection of short stories “Heart Lamp” also received the International Booker Prize. To date, five Indian authors have won the original Booker Prize, while two have received the translated International Booker.
