New Delhi, June 8: A unique initiative is bridging learning and tourism in India, involving students from Australia and Japan visiting 50 villages across 10 states. This program, spearheaded by Local Narratives, aims to enhance local economies while providing educational experiences for foreign students.
One notable example is the Totopara village in West Bengal, home to the Toto tribe, which has only 1,700 members left. Struggling for identity and resources, the village needed an additional room for its sole school and wanted to open a café run by local women. A 14-member team from Christ University in Bengaluru visited the village last year and collaborated with the women to create a pricing model and menu for the café.
As a result of this initiative, the village earned ₹600,000, which funded the construction of the school room and the establishment of the café. Local Narratives has successfully integrated learning into tourism, transforming it from mere entertainment into an educational experience.
Students from prestigious institutions such as the University of Newcastle and Queensland University in Australia, along with schools in Tokyo and Nagoya, are now coming to India to participate in this program.
Founded in 2021, Local Narratives focuses on community-based tourism, allowing students to live like locals and understand their way of life. This initiative not only benefits the students but also the villages, as seen in Sunkiya, Uttarakhand, where the first community tourism playbook was created after a student visit. In another instance, women weavers in Asnora, Goa, were connected with buyers, significantly increasing their income.
Additionally, the program has received approval from IIM Bengaluru as a credit course, allowing students to earn academic credits while learning about social entrepreneurship in these villages.
Vaishnavi Somani, the founder of Local Narratives, emphasizes the importance of linking tourism with learning, stating that a five-day curriculum was developed in collaboration with co-faculty from Local Narratives.
